textbook, specifically a new chapter titled "The Role of the Judiciary in Our Society

The Supreme Court of India took suo motu cognisance (action on its own) of the textbook's content, which explicitly discussed "corruption in the judiciary" as a significant challenge. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant described the inclusion as a "deep-rooted conspiracy" and a "calculated move" to defame the institution.
Key Content in the Disputed Chapter
According to reports from The Indian Express and other outlets, the textbook included:
- Systemic Challenges: It listed corruption at various levels, a massive backlog of cases (over 47 million in lower courts), and a shortage of judges as primary hurdles.
- Impact on Access: It noted that for the poor and disadvantaged, corruption can worsen the issue of access to justice.
- Quotes from Leadership: It featured a July 2025 quote from former CJI B.R. Gavai, stating that instances of corruption and misconduct "surface even within the judiciary" and erode public faith.
- Accountability Mechanisms: The text explained the impeachment process for removing judges and the use of the CPGRAMS grievance system.
Current Status
- Withdrawal: Following the court's intervention, the NCERT issued an apology, calling the inclusion an "unintentional error in judgement."
- Ban on Distribution: The Supreme Court ordered an immediate ban on the circulation of the textbook in both physical and digital formats.
- Rewriting: The chapter is being rewritten in consultation with legal authorities and is expected to be reissued for the 2026–27 academic session.
